This is my favorite song right now. I’ve been listening to it for at least an hour now, and it just becomes more and more amazing the more I listen to it. So, here it is for your listening pleasure.
Exercise two in “Steering the Craft” is all about punctuatuion… Or the lack thereof. Here’s mine:
there was never enough time in the day to do all that we wanted to do when we were children and I guess that didnt change when we became adults because there still isnt enough time only now instead of worrying about fitting in a bike ride and swimming and swinging and fort building out in the woods while leaving enough time for meals and Power Rangers and bath time and sleep were trying to fit family time and alone time and reading time and candlelit bubble bath with a glass of wine time around days at the office and commutes and grocery shopping and bills and phone calls and homework and meal preparation and there just simply isnt enough time in one twenty four hour period to do it all if we still want to sleep and if we never slept we would never get anything done anyway and wed fall asleep at work or while making dinner or while taking a candlelit bubble bath with a glass of wine and wed be right back to where we started because there just arent enough hours in the day to do everything
Enjoy!
Okay, I’ll admit it: since the quarter ended and my two hours on the train each day have ceased, (until next Monday, when the next quarter starts) I’ve mostly stopped reading. It’s a shame, and I have so many more books that I want to read, but I’ve been spending most of my time doing a whole lot of nothing. But, I think it’s time to get started reading again.
This weekend I picked up a book called “White Ghost Girls,” by Alice Greenway for five bucks at Barnes and Noble. (Sometimes, you can find the best stuff in their bargain section.) It’s very good so far. And also this weekend, a friend of mine picked up “City of Ashes,” the second book in Cassandra Clare’s “Mortal Instruments” trilogy, for me. Since it’s been so long since I read the first book, “City of Bones,” I’m going to have to re-read that before I start the second one. I’m pretty excited. That book was amazing.
After those, I plan to start either Joan Didion’s “The Year of Magical Thinking,” or Joe Musser’s “The Infidel.” I haven’t decided yet.
But! For all of you out there, I do have a few links to share to get you started on your summer reading. The first is just something that I really liked, simply because, while you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, the cover is incredibly important in hooking a reader at the bookstore: Chip Kidd reveals his seven favorite book covers since 2000.
Secondly, here is Newsweek’s “What to read now. And why,” their list of which 50 books, “new or old, fiction or nonfiction—open a window on the times we live in, whether they deal directly with the issues of today or simply help us see ourselves in new and surprising ways.”
So, give them a looksee, and then head down to your local indie bookstore (or Borders, or Barnes and Noble) and check out what’s available. Summers were made for reading. :)
